Description
The Theatre Royal in Newcastle upon Tyne is a theatre built in 1837 by Benjamin Green for Richard Grainger. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and is designed in a classical style. The building has two storeys and features seven windows. A prominent full-height hexastyle Corinthian portico is present, with paired outer columns on high plinths, and a pediment that displays the Royal arms created by Tate.
Behind the portico are three bays that contain a range of entrance doors and overlights, one of which features an art nouveau grille labeled 'UPPER CIRCLE'. These doors are situated beneath round-headed windows in a pilastered addition that includes a balustraded balcony added in 1901. The round-headed windows above have keyed surrounds. The windows in the bays flanking the portico have bracketed pedimented architraves, with the outer bays containing a public house to the left and a booking office to the right. Above these, there are sash windows with balustrades, architraves, and bracketed pediments, topped by a balustrade and parapet.
The interior was remodeled in 1901 by Matcham in a richly ornamented style, featuring three tiers of balconies and boxes with bombee balustrades that are richly stuccoed. The proscenium arch is carved, and the ceiling is adorned with ornamental plasterwork.
