Description
The Theatre Royal Lounge and Restaurant, also known as The Royal Public House, is a Grade I listed building located on Market Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. Built around 1837 by architect Benjamin Green for developer Richard Grainger, it features a sandstone ashlar exterior and a Welsh slate roof. The building stands four storeys high and consists of seven bays.
The ground floor is characterized by rusticated pilasters and an entablature, with altered windows situated beneath cornices. The upper floors display flat Roman Doric pilasters on the third and fourth bays, with sash windows, most of which have glazing bars. The second-floor windows are adorned with moulded sills, and there is a prominent cornice on the second-floor entablature. The top-floor windows are set in plain reveals beneath an eaves band and cornice.
The right side of The Royal Public House contributes to the overall design of the Grey Street elevation of the Theatre Royal, which is located at No. 98. The building is recognized for its group value within the context of the surrounding architecture.
