Description
The Turk's Head Hotel is a Grade II* listed building located on Grey Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was built around 1837, likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The hotel features a classical style and is constructed from sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof. It stands four storeys tall with attics and has eight bays.
The three left bays of the building continue the plain style of the adjacent Nos. 61 to 67, featuring a rusticated ground floor with a cyma-moulded plinth, altered windows, and a cornice. Above this, the plain reveals to the sashes are complemented by a second-floor sill band. There is a second-floor band and an entablature below the top floor, which is adorned with a cornice and blocking course.
The five bays on the right have end pavilions, with a rusticated ground floor that includes two entrances in the left two bays and three altered windows, as well as a carriage entrance in the right end bay. The ground floor has a fascia and cornice. The upper floors are characterized by Giant Orders, featuring flat Doric pilasters on the pavilions and attached fluted Ionic columns that define the central three bays. The second-floor sills are moulded in the central three bays and have a band in the outer bays. All windows are sashes with glazing bars, and the second-floor entablature has a prominent cornice.
The fourth storey of the pavilions includes pilasters, a central top balustrade, a continuous cornice and blocking course, and a parapet with carved pilasters above the pavilions. The building was empty at the time of the survey.
