Description

The County Court building at 56 Westgate Road in Newcastle upon Tyne was constructed in 1864. It is designed in a classical style and built from sandstone ashlar, featuring rusticated quoins on the upper floors and a dark slate roof.

The building stands three storeys high with five bays and an archway on the left side. There are steps leading up to a double door located in the right bay, which is topped by a fanlight. The rusticated ground floor includes voussoirs above the end doors, four round-headed windows, and the left archway. Masks are present on the arch keys. The upper floors feature margined sash windows, with shallow segmental heads on the first floor and square heads on the second floor. These windows are framed in architraves that are lugged and keyed on the first floor and have bracketed sills on the second floor. The ground floor has an entablature with a dentilled cornice, while the second floor has a sill band and lintel string that supports brackets for the top cornice. The low-pitched hipped roof is adorned with tall ashlar chimneys that have bracketed cornices. Above the left archway, there is a blocking course displaying the Royal Arms, and the ground-floor frieze is inscribed with "COUNTY COURT 1864."

In front of the building, there are four square piers flanking the carriage entrance on the left and the pedestrian entrance on the right. A flat-coped dwarf wall between these piers supports spear-headed wrought iron railings and gates.
