Description
The Trustee Savings Bank, built between 1862 and 1863 by J.E. Watson, is a bank located on Grainger Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof, showcasing a classical architectural style. The building has two storeys and is arranged in a five-three-five bay configuration, with an additional three bays on the left return.
The central section is pedimented and includes a double door with an overlight. The ground floor has rusticated piers supporting an arcade, with round-headed windows beneath a modillioned cornice. On the first floor, there is a central balcony and engaged Ionic columns that support a pediment featuring the motto "INDUSTRY" beneath a beehive and cornucopia. The first floor also has round-headed windows, a modillioned cornice, and a pediment, topped with a balustrade. The roof is hipped, and the left return mirrors the main facade, displaying the arms of Newcastle in its pediment.
