Description

The building at 112-118 Grainger Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, is a group of shops and houses, now shops and a restaurant, dating to approximately 1836. It was likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. Constructed in painted sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, the building features a curved corner where it meets Market Street. It rises four storeys and is five bays wide. The ground floor has been altered. The upper floors incorporate giant, fluted Ionic attached columns. The windows are sash windows in plain reveals, most retaining glazing bars, with some inserted ventilators. A second-floor entablature and prominent cornice are notable features. The top floor windows are flanked by panelled pilasters, and the building is topped by a cornice and blocking course with blocks above the pilasters.
