Description

The east front of Grainger Market is a substantial range of shops and houses built in 1835 by John Dobson for Richard Grainger. It forms a key part of the covered market on Grainger Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. Constructed from sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, the building is four storeys high and comprises 46 bays, arranged symmetrically. The end bays of the central groups contain entrances to the market. The front features prominent Corinthian pilasters rising to three-bay end pavilions and the entrance bays, standing above 20th-century shops. Upper floors have sash windows with plain reveals; some retain glazing bars. The second floor windows have aprons and slightly projecting sills, while the first-floor sashes above the market entrances are framed by architraves with bracketed cornices. A second-floor band and dentilled cornice run along the front, topped by a cornice and parapet. Pilasters, some ornamented with acroteria, are present to the central and end groups, with a blocking course to the intermediate bays. A mid-20th century canopy covers most of the shops. The building's design connects with numbers 1 to 37 Nelson Street and numbers 1 to 25 Nun Street, completing the composition with one-bay returns.
