Description
Number 8 Nelson Street is a house and shop, now functioning solely as a shop, built around 1836, likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar, with later additions of pink granite and terra-cotta columns at the shop front. It stands three storeys high and has five bays.
The central entrance features a renewed double door set beneath a swan-neck pediment, which includes a keyed roundel and garlands. This door is recessed between tall shop windows that have slender glazing bars, and Jacobean-style columns flank the entrance. The end bays are defined by rusticated pilasters, each containing six-panelled double doors with high overlights that feature patterned glazing bars.
The ground floor has a fascia and cornice, while the first floor includes a sill string for the sash windows, which are framed in architraves. The central window has a blind balustrade and a bracketed pediment, with cornices above the outer bays. The second-floor windows also have architraves with bracketed sills. All windows are fitted with glazing bars. The building is topped with a bracketed cornice and a balustrade. It is important to note that the building has been redeveloped behind the facade, making only the facade of interest.
