Description
No. 14 on Nelson Street is a building dating from 1838 that originally served as a Dispensary and later became a Fruit Exchange. It is now part of the facade of the Eldon Centre shopping precinct. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and has three storeys with five bays. The ground floor features a channelled rusticated design, with steps leading up to a central double door that is panelled and flanked by pilasters, with a blocked overlight above. The upper floors contain sash windows with glazing bars and architraves; the window above the door has a blind balustrade and a bracketed pediment. There are cornices above the first-floor windows and bracketed sills on the second floor. The building is topped with a bracketed cornice and a balustrade. It is included for its group value, although it has been redeveloped behind the facade, making only the facade of interest.
