Description

This is a row of shops and houses forming the west front of Grainger Market in Newcastle upon Tyne. Built in 1835 by John Dobson for Richard Grainger, it is a substantial building of classical design. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the façade is 50 bays wide and symmetrical. It features giant Corinthian pilasters to the end pavilions and over the market entrance bays, which are flanked by a central twelve-bay block. The market entrances are framed by wide Tuscan pilasters and an entablature. The upper floors contain sash windows with glazing bars, with second-floor aprons and projecting sills. A bracketed dentilled cornice runs along the second floor, topped by a plain cornice and a parapet with pilasters over the pavilions, and a blocking course over the intermediate bays. The building's returns seamlessly integrate with Numbers 1-37 Nelson Street and Numbers 1-25 Nun Street. Contemporary shop fronts replace the original detailing at street level, while the reveals of the upper-floor windows are plain.
