Description

The south front of Grainger Market comprises shops and a public house, forming the south elevation of a covered market. It dates to 1835 and was designed by John Dobson for Richard Grainger. The building's end bays are returns of numbers 11-43 Clayton Street and 95-137 Grainger Street, which complete the architectural composition. Constructed in sandstone ashlar, the building is of classical style, standing three storeys high with 34 bays. Five entrances lead to the market, two with segmental arches and pilasters on the right. The ground floor shops are 20th century additions. Giant Corinthian pilasters define the end pavilions. Most of the sash windows retain glazing bars, although some first-floor lintels have been renewed. Second-floor windows feature aprons and slightly-projecting sills. The end bays have tripartite windows in architraves on the floor band, topped by a dentilled cornice. A top parapet with pilasters defines the eight-bay projections, with a blocking course to the intermediate bays.
