Description
These shops and houses, now used as shops, date to approximately 1836 and were probably designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The building is located on Grainger Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, and includes the address 30A Nun Street. Constructed from sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, the building is four storeys high with attics. It comprises 21 bays arranged in a 3:15:3 configuration. The ground floor has been altered with mid-20th century shop fronts. The upper floors feature sash windows, some with glazing bars. The central 15 bays have plain window reveals, while the three bays at each end slightly project and have architraves to the windows, with cornices to those on the first floor. Paired brackets support the moulded sills of the second-floor windows. A horizontal band runs along the 15-bay section, and a second-floor entablature projects forward over the end bays, accented by a prominent cornice. A top cornice and blocking course define the end sections. A mansard roof, with 12 square-headed dormers, has been inserted into 12 bays to the right of the 15-bay section. A low-pitched hipped roof covers the remaining bays.
