Description
No. 22 Newgate Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It was built before 1827 for Major Anderson and underwent alterations around 1900. The building features ripple-dressed sandstone ashlar with tooled margins and has a Welsh slate roof with a brick chimney, all designed in the Gothic style. It stands three storeys tall and has three bays. The shop has a pedimented fascia, and the wide central bay includes three pointed-arched cusped lights above a square-headed window with a label string. Above this, there is a simpler window with three lower pointed lights and a dripmould. The narrow projecting side bays contain cusped lancets with dripmoulds beneath blind cross slits and shields, with the left shield eroded and the right displaying the Anderson arms. A central sill string is present on the first floor, and the parapet has roll-moulded coping. The roof is hipped with a central chimney. Historically, this building marked the west boundary of the estate of the Anderson mansion in Pilgrim Street, and John Dobson had prepared a development scheme for Major Anderson's estate. In 1827, this house was described as being 'in an antique fashion'.
