Description

The Duke of Northumberland Public House, located on the west side of Clayton Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, dates to circa 1837 and was likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a concrete tile roof. It is four storeys high with seven windows in total, the two outer windows on each side being set within semicircular bowed projections. A central double door, featuring eight panels and an overlight, provides the main entrance, with further doors, also with beaded panels and overlights, located in the side bays. The windows have plain reveals, with most featuring glazing bars. The ground floor windows have been renewed. Architectural details include floor bands and a prominent cornice at the second floor level, as well as a top cornice.
