Description
Numbers 10 and 12 on Nelson Street in Newcastle upon Tyne are a music hall building, now serving as the facade of the Eldon Centre shopping precinct. The building dates back to 1838, as indicated on a panel above the door, and was constructed for Richard Grainger. It is made of sandstone ashlar and has three storeys with three bays.
There are steps leading up to a six-panelled double door with a fanlight featuring glazing bars, all set within a round-arched surround beneath a bracketed pediment supported by slender pilasters. At the ground floor on the left, there are inserted grilles beneath a cornice. Above, two-storey arched recesses contain round-headed sash windows; the lower windows have keyed surrounds with pilasters, while the upper ones feature panelled sills. There is a similar recess above the door that holds a window with a bracketed blind balustrade. An apron panel over the door is incised with "MUSIC HALL/1838." The top of the building features an entablature with a prominent cornice and a blocking course. The building is included for its group value, although it has been redeveloped behind the facade, making only the facade of interest.
