Description
The Earl Grey Monument is a Grade I listed column monument with a statue, located on Grey Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was completed in 1838 by architect Benjamin Green, with the statue crafted by Baily. The monument was funded by public subscription to honor Charles Earl Grey, a key figure in parliamentary reform. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, it stands approximately 135 feet tall. The structure features a tall panelled pedestal that includes an inscription on the south side and a door on the west side, supporting a Roman Doric column topped with a balcony. At the summit, a heroic-sized statue of Earl Grey in robes is positioned on a tall corniced square pedestal. An inscription on the north side commemorates the centenary of the passage of the 1832 Reform Bill.
