Description
No. 22 Blackett Street is a shop and offices built in 1892 by Cackett for Thomas Cook. The building has four storeys and an attic, featuring one bay. The ground floor shop was updated around 1980. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and has pilasters that flank each floor and window. The first floor showcases Jacobean style, while the second and third floors have flat Corinthian pilasters, and the top floor features Ionic pilasters with fluted detailing in the attic. The first floor includes a full-width window with three wide lights beneath a keyed lintel, and the three second-floor windows are adorned with archivolts under a bracketed cornice. The third floor has a central projecting window case supported by detached columns, which leads to a balustraded balcony with a cornice and pediment. The top ramped parapet flanks the attic window, which is set under a scrolled pediment with a peacock finial. The parapet features seahorses that support the dormer, and the end finials are designed as beasts holding shields.
