Description

Brunswick Methodist Chapel is a Methodist chapel dated 1820, located in Newcastle upon Tyne. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings. It has a two-storey, five-bay pedimented east front, although the right bay is obscured by adjacent buildings. There are steps leading up to a Tuscan porch with a prominent cornice, which contains steps up to a central six-panelled double door, topped with a fanlight featuring radiating glazing bars. The chapel has round-headed windows, most of which have stone sills and are set in arched recesses, with a sill band for the upper windows. A band at the eaves level and three rectangular stone surrounds for ventilators, with the central one being blind, are located in projecting bays under the pediment. The pediment is continuous with a cornice that partly covers the side bays, which have ramped coping. The left return to Northumberland Court is plainer, with a six-bay layout and the last three bays pedimented.

Inside, the ground floor was extensively altered around 1983, and a first floor was inserted. The upper part of the chapel now features a panelled gallery and pews, with plaster walls and delicate stucco ceiling decoration. Corinthian pilasters frame the west apse, which contains a wide panelled pulpit.
