Description
No. 45 Northumberland Street is a shop building dating from around 1900. It has three storeys and three bays. The ground floor shop front has been renewed, and there are rusticated pilasters on each floor. The first floor features a tripartite sash window with a central pediment, flanked by niches. Above, there are three sash windows with keyed architraves and intermediate niches. The cornice on the first floor projects forward over the pilasters and over brackets that lead to the second floor niches. A broken segmental dentilled pediment, which also projects forward over the niches, is adorned with swags, a bracket, and a raised panel. The top of the building has a blocking course. Life-size figures in shell-canopied niches, dressed in period costume, represent Sir John Marley, Roger Thornton, Thomas Bewick, and Harry Hotspur.
