Description

Eldon Buildings is a hotel that has been converted into shops, located at 29, 31, and 33 Blackett Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was built in 1893 by architects Oliver and Leeson and features ground-floor alterations made around 1982. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and topped with a dark slate roof, situated on a curved corner site at Grey Street.

It stands four storeys tall and consists of eight bays, with the two bays at the left end and the one at the right end being wider. The hotel entrance is located in the wide right bay. The ground floor has an entablature with a bracketed cornice that supports first-floor balconies, although the balconies have been removed from the two left end bays. The first and second floors are adorned with a Giant Composite Order, featuring Venetian windows in the wide bays of the first floor and round-headed windows in five bays along the curve, all with ornamental glazing bars under keyed arches.

The second-floor sash windows are framed by architraves and sit beneath an entablature with a prominent modillioned cornice. The top sashes are plain, with a fluted band between the heads of the windows. The top cornice and parapet are decorated with three carved panels, displaying "18 F/M 93" on the bays flanking the curve and "ELDON BUILDINGS" at the center in Art Nouveau lettering, positioned under alternate pediments. A high-relief coat of arms is featured in the central pediment.
