Description
No. 12A on Nelson Street is a warehouse built around 1899 by Marshall and Tweedy, now serving as the facade of the Eldon Centre shopping precinct. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a Free Baroque style. It stands four storeys tall with attics and consists of five bays. The ground floor is adorned with Ionic pilasters that flank renewed windows and recessed entrances, topped with a bracketed fascia. Slender pilasters extend 2 ½ storeys to define the bays, each capped with cartouche finials. The outer bays feature two-storey bracketed oriels, while the remaining windows have slender wood mullions and transoms. The top windows are framed with two-storey keyed architraves in the inner bays and segmental-headed architraves in the outer bays. A modillioned eaves cornice and a parapet with three segmental-headed attic windows complete the design. The building is included for its group value, although it has been redeveloped behind the facade, making only the facade of interest.
