Description

The Cordwainers' Public House is a building located on Nelson Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, dating from 1838, as indicated in the central panel. Originally a meeting hall for the Cordwainers Company, it now serves as the facade of the Eldon Centre shopping precinct. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and consists of three and four storeys with eight bays, including one curved bay on the left corner.

The left pavilion features four storeys and two bays, with plain reveals for the ground floor windows and architraves for the upper floor windows. It has a frieze and cornice above the first floor and bracketed sills on the second floor. A bracketed cornice runs above these two bays, while the top floor sashes are set in plain reveals beneath the cornice and blocking course. The six recessed bays have plain reveals for the sashes, with an aproned sill string on the second floor and a top cornice. The first floor has a band across these six bays, and all windows include glazing bars. The left corner bay features curved glass. The central panel is incised with "CORDWAINERS HALL" and the date in Roman numerals. The building is noted for its group value, although it has been redeveloped behind the facade, making only the facade of interest.
