Description

This is the facade of the former Crown Hotel, now Nos. 6 to 24 Clayton Street West, Newcastle upon Tyne. It dates from approximately 1837 and was likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The facade is constructed of sandstone ashlar with an unseen roof. The building rises to four storeys and comprises 30 bays arranged in a stepped back design, receding twice towards the east. A flight of steps leads to the main entrance, featuring double doors with eight panels each, topped by fanlights set within deep reveals. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals. Architectural details include a sill band on the second floor, horizontal bands marking each floor, a prominent cornice on the second floor, a top cornice, and a blocking course. The building is included on the list for its contribution to the group value of the area.
