Description
No. 5 Elswick Road is part of a terrace of houses built in the mid-19th century. The structure is made of English garden wall bond brick, featuring a painted ashlar plinth and dressings, with Welsh slate roofs and sandstone rubble at the rear and returns. The building is two storeys high with two bays. The right corner of the building includes a shop that has a carved bracketed fascia and a curved corner bay. The doors have architraves, with some being four-panelled and featuring over-lights. The windows, mostly sash types with some having glazing bars, are topped with wedge stone lintels, and there is a curved window in the right corner facing Westgate Road. The ground floor has projecting stone sills, and there is a sill band on the first floor. The eaves feature a band and gutter cornices, and there are end brick chimneys, some of which are ashlar-corniced. This building is included for its group value with the Church of St. Matthew and as an example of early working-class housing.
