Description

NZ 26 SW NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE HOUSTON STREET (north side) 11/317 St. Paul's C. of E. School (north part) G.V. II Barber Surgeon's hall, now part of church school. Circa 1850 by John Dobson for Company of Barber Surgeons. Sandstone ashlar with long horizontal quoins; roof not visible; felt-covered lantern. 2 storeys, 1:3:1 bays. South ground floor openings blocked, except for central window converted to entrance, and obscured by later school building; first floor has sash windows with glazing bars, the 3 central recessed and arcaded with impost bands and scrolled keys; DE PRESCENTIA DEI inscribed around central of 3 round window heads with hollow- chamfered reveals; staff of Aesculapius in spandrels; keyed architraves to sashes in outer bays. Cornice and high parapet with pilasters and blocks. High gambrel-shaped lantern for throwing light on dissecting table in demonstration room.
