Description
Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church and Presbytery, built between 1969 and 1972 by Peter Whiston, features a harled exterior with a distinctive swept valley roof. The church is connected to the presbytery and hall by a single-storey vestibule passage and has tall brick base courses.
The north elevation includes a single-storey link on the left and a prominent entrance with a recessed arrangement of four doors, divided by plain piers. These two-leaf timber doors support a jettied upper stage that features a large gallery window with vertical panes, including louvred and pivot panes in the lower section. To the right, there is a lean-to stair tower with a tall strip window on the north side and a forestair leading to a door on the west side, topped by a tall window and a slender cross above.
The west elevation displays a lop-sided V-roof, mostly blank, with a tall wallhead on the left that dips towards the centre and rises gently on the outer right. There is a window on the outer left at ground level and a door below the valley of the roof on the right.
The south elevation shows the end wall of the day chapel, which has two tall window strips flanking the centre, while the rest of the wall is blank. The church features Picot windows and coloured glass in the day chapel, along with a copper-clad roof that has contrasting metal flashings.
Inside, the church has timber boarded walls and ceilings, with encased beams dividing the space into three sections. The roof sweeps up over a timber raked gallery to the north. The altar is situated on a shallow dais area with a gable-headed recess behind, flanked by gable-headed screen walls with two-leaf doors that allow light from the day chapel through coloured glass panels at the top. The day chapel boasts a dramatic boarded roof and encased supporting beams, with brick-lined walls.
The presbytery is a gabled, two-storey rectangular house, approximately four bays by three bays, featuring large metal-framed windows in the principal rooms. A tall glazed stair bay is located next to the main door, which is set back at a re-entrant angle to the court formed by the link to the church and hall. The rear elevation includes a forestair leading to a secondary door, and there is a narrow recessed window panel off-centre on the broad gabled west elevation. The presbytery has casement and pivot windows, and a copper roof.
