Description

Knightswood Community Centre, located at 20 Dykebar Avenue, was designed by Thomas Somers, City Engineer, in 1938. This single-storey building is constructed in the Modern Movement style, featuring a shallow H-plan layout with a concrete base course and lintel course, and is made of red bricks with a flat roof and metal windows.

On the southwest elevation facing Dykebar Avenue, the building has deeply bowed wings on the outer left and right, each containing three 5-light windows. The centrepiece is a taller section that is slightly advanced, flanked by bays that emphasize horizontal lines with narrow window bands.

The northeast elevation shows the wings advanced on the outer left and right, with a tall three-bay block at the centre. Lower porches project from the intervening bays, featuring bands of clerestorey windows with a continuous cill course and coping at the eaves. Canopied doors are located at the outer re-entrant angles.

On the southeast and northwest elevations, there are three 4-light windows grouped at the centre of the southeast elevation and four on the southwest elevation.

The interior has not been seen. The building features a horizontal-pane metal glazing pattern with casement and top-hopper windows, a flat roof with concrete coping, and brick stacks.
