Description

The Shrubhill Tramway Workshops and Power Station, located on Leith Walk in Edinburgh, dates to 1898. It is a horizontally aligned complex of factory buildings, comprising single stories and a basement, with an irregular plan across eight bays. The building is characterised by a tall ground floor, a clerestory, and a tall chimney stalk. It is constructed of red brick and red sandstone ashlar, with ashlar or brick margins, and features ashlar banding to the brickwork.

The northwest elevation, facing Dryden Street, is composed of three- and four-bay blocks, with recessed connecting blocks and a later addition to the right. To the left, large round-arched recesses contain windows, with a lintel course above. A return to the right features a similar large round-arched recessed opening, topped with a shaped pediment and oculus. The recessed connecting block has a pitched roof and three large openings below. The block to the right has a base course, lintel course, band course, cornice, and coped blocking course, punctuated by four round-arched recessed bays with windows within each arch. The clerestory features eight circular windows and continues the design around the return. A further return has two round-arched recesses, alongside an adjoining block with five circular windows to the clerestory, and a large ashlar transomed and mullioned round-arched window above a shaped pediment. A modern enclosed staircase projects from the block to the right.

The southwest elevation is an eight-bay red brick block, with round-arched, subdivided recesses to the first and seventh bays, and irregular fenestration with relieving arches in other bays. A stugged ashlar block, with a tall round-arched tripartite window topped with a shaped pediment, is located to the right, continuing the design across the elevation.

The northeast elevation is a seven-bay block, abutting Shaws Terrace, Place and Street, and features pediments above the bays.

The southeast elevation, the entrance front, consists of a modern office block built around 1967.

The building has small-pane timber glazing. The roofs are covered in grey slates, with glazed and metal-clad ridges, and a timber ridge ventilator.

The octagonal brick chimney stalk is polygonal and tapering, with a decorated top section on a square base, rising to approximately 22 metres.

The interior features a grand painted brick finish, with recesses mirroring the external arches. An exposed steel-frame roof construction includes a glazed central ridge section. An impost cornice runs along the tall round-headed arches. The clerestory's circular windows are set within round-arched recesses, and a frieze of round-arched panels sits above the gable ends, with a tall window in the gablehead.
