Description
Bridgeside Works, located on Mcdonald Road in Edinburgh, is a factory building designed by Cooper and Taylor in 1897. It is a two-storey, twelve-bay structure with a rectangular plan, constructed from stugged squared and snecked sandstone ashlar, featuring red sandstone ashlar margins. The building includes a base course, a cill course to the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course.
On the southwest elevation facing Mcdonald Road, the first and second bays slightly project and feature a segmental pediment at the top. The ground floor has paired stone-mullioned bipartite windows, while the first floor has paired blind round-arched openings with blind oculi in the center. Bays three to nine consist of stone-mullioned bipartites at the ground level and blind round-arched openings above. The tenth and eleventh bays also project slightly, with the tenth bay showcasing fluted pilasters that support a mutule cornice over a key-stoned round-arched entrance, which has a two-leaf timber panelled door. To the right of this entrance is a stone-mullioned bipartite window with relieving arches, and the first floor features stone-mullioned bipartites, with the left window adorned with a broken pediment and an oculus. The gable above is large and made of stone, featuring a pedimented oculus, flanking scrolls, and a segmental pediment that is interrupted by a stack above. On the outer right of the building, there are stone-mullioned tripartite windows on each floor, with a box dormer above.
The northwest side elevation has a segmental pedimented gablehead, with a window to the left at ground level and stone-mullioned tripartites to the right on the first floor.
The southeast side elevation is three bays wide, with the third bay projecting to the right and featuring a segmental pedimented stone wallhead dormer. The first and second bays to the left at ground level have stone-mullioned bipartites, while the third bay has a small window to the left and a window to the right. The first floor includes stone-mullioned bipartites to the left and a window in the center, with a tall wallhead stack to the left.
The building features timber sash and case windows with plate glass and a combination of four- and six-pane over two-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes rooflights.
Surrounding the property are low coped ashlar boundary walls, complemented by square plan banded ashlar gatepiers topped with ball finials.
