Description

The Savoy Centre, located at 130-152 (even numbers) Sauchiehall Street, is a commercial building designed by H and D Barclay in 1895. It features a free classical style and stands five storeys tall with five wide bays. The ground floor accommodates modern shops and has an ashlar cornice raised on console brackets at the centre.

The facade includes an elliptically arched giant pilastrade across the five main bays and four narrow round-arched giant bays, extending through the first, second, and third floors. The main bays on the first and second floors are highlighted by canted centrally aediculed sculpted windows, with round-headed lights positioned above. Additional architectural details include a frieze and cornice at the ground floor, a moulded cill band on the first floor, a partially revealed entablature on the second floor, and a sculpted figure frieze on the third floor, which is topped with a mutule cornice featuring dentils.

The building is finished with a dwarf Ionic columned and pilastered eaves gallery that includes an entablature. The outer bays are pedimented with sculpted tympana, and the parapet is raised with scrolled supports and an anthemion frieze on blocks, flanked by urns in the end bays.
