Description

123, 131 and 133 Sauchiehall Street is a former tearoom designed by James Carruthers, with plans dated 1925 and opened in 1927. This four-storey, five-bay building features a streamlined classical style, constructed of polished pale sandstone ashlar with metal panels adorned with a wreath motif that separates the upper stories. The bays are divided by simple giant pilasters, and there is a consoled dentilled eaves cornice and blocking course. The ground floor has been altered, while the rear is finished in red brick. The original large tripartite style metal casement windows, which have stained glass margins, are present on the second and third floors.

Inside, the ground and first floors have been modified to accommodate a modern shop interior. However, the second and third floors retain a near-intact tearoom scheme featuring quality timberwork and remarkable classical and rococo-style plasterwork. Some chimneypieces and dado panelling have been removed, but the original lift remains in place. An elegant wide staircase showcases a marble dado and black and white marble landings, complemented by a bronze lattice baluster. The impressive former luncheon and smoking rooms on the second and third floors are notable for their plaster rococo panels on the walls, along with timber pilasters and architraves.
