Description

Lion Chambers is an 8-storey commercial building located at 172 Hope Street in Glasgow, designed by James Salmon Jun. (Salmon Son and Gillespie) in 1905. This building showcases Glasgow style Art Nouveau architecture and features a shop on the ground floor. The facade has three irregular bays facing Hope Street, with a canted corner, and three shallow canted returns to Bath Lane.

Constructed of reinforced concrete, the building has casement windows with small-pane glazing and a cill band at the first floor. A sculpted panel is positioned between the first and second floors, and there is an eaves cornice. The southmost bay has a square canted section that rises from the first to the fourth floor, supported by sculpted heads at the fourth floor. A wide semi-circular keyblocked window is found in the panelled section at the sixth floor, which is topped by a pedimented gable.

The canted corner bay projects slightly over the fourth floor and is topped on the seventh floor by an octagonal cupola featuring parabolic arched windows, bracketted cornices, and small dormers. The narrow central bay includes a circular window at the fourth floor and small round-headed windows above it at the sixth floor. The southern return has simple fenestration and is topped by a pedimented gable, while a double stack rises from the south-west angle. The return to Bath Lane consists of three shallow canted return bays with metal casements.
