Description

1-3 Water Row in Glasgow is a five-storey building designed by James Salmon and Son, along with J G Gillespie, in 1899. It features a Glasgow-style design with three bays across the front and two bays deep, highlighted by a canted corner bay. The ground floor showcases a curved corner entrance by Derwent Wood, featuring a boldly sculptured trireme's prow with 'B L Co' on the sails, flanked by two winged "Winds" resting on Corinthian capitals.

On the Water Row elevation, there are two arched windows set between columns adorned with lively capitals by Johan Keller. The north side has a stair entrance and a plain modern shop front, along with a cornice. The first floor includes three large depressed arched windows between pilasters. The upper floors display Art Nouveau detailing around the window heads, while the north bay features shallow canted windows from the second to the fourth floors, with tripartite windows under a steep pediment, flanked by wallhead stacks. The building has deep projecting eaves over the central bays, and the corner bay windows are canted out at the first and fourth floors. At the top, there is a remarkable lead-covered crown with flanking wallhead stacks.

On the Govan Road elevation, an arched window is positioned between columns with lively capitals. There is a large altered plain window to the west, along with a cornice. The west bay has an advanced first-floor tripartite depressed arched window with pilasters. The second and third floors feature bipartite windows set in ogee pediments, while the fourth floor has a low round-headed keystoned window. The parapet is present above. The middle bay contains plain small and large windows from the second to the fourth floors, all situated under projecting eaves. The east bay has an elaborate ogee pediment above the first-floor window. Most windows retain their original glazing, except for some on the fourth floor and the ground floor. The bank interior is modern.
