Description
St Mary's Church Hall in Govan Cross, Glasgow, designed by Robert Baldie in 1873, is a two-storey building constructed of snecked rubble in a Gothic style. It contains shops on the ground floor beneath the church hall and a church officer's house. The ground floor facing Govan Road is hidden behind modern cladding, but a Gothic door remains visible on Greenwell Street. The house at the west end features a first floor and attic with a gusset design. The first floor has sash windows set under false pointed arches adorned with trefoils. The cornice is interrupted by three segmental arched dormer windows topped with fleur de lis finials, and there is an oculus in the dormer at the top of the gusset. The building has one ridge and two wallhead stacks and is topped with a slate roof.
The hall itself has three pairs of three lancet windows facing Govan Road, which are linked by a continuous hoodmould. The east elevation is a blank rubble wall. The interior is plain.
Behind the hall, there is a two-storey extension made of rubble and brick, along with a square stone tower featuring an eaves cornice and a large wooden belfry. This tower replaced the original 150-foot spire.
