Description

St Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, located at 831 Govan Road in Glasgow, was designed by John Honeyman and built between 1877 and 1878, opening in 1879. It is constructed in a Byzantine style using coursed rubble with red ashlar polychrome bands.

The northern elevation features a gabled design with a round-headed doorway adorned with dogtooth moulding, flanked by two small side windows that have hood-moulds linked to a string course. Inside, there is a Romanesque arcade leading to the gallery, supported by columns with cushion capitals. The gable end displays a cusped rose window surrounded by blind arches and two quatrefoils, topped with a cross finial.

At the re-entrant angle, there is a low porch that includes a round-headed window and door, both linked by a string course. Above this, a shouldered arched window is set beneath a low roof. A square tower is positioned at the angle, featuring two narrow windows and an intersecting Romanesque blind arcade beneath an open arched belfry. The tower is capped with a steep copper pyramid roof and a finial. A low extension with a paired Romanesque window is located next to the tower.

On the eastern elevation, there are four tall round-headed windows beneath paired Romanesque windows, along with a corbel table and a slate roof, with a lower section at the rear.

Inside, the church has a wide nave with a wooden roof supported by corbels. The chancel features a semi-circular domed apse lined with coloured marble panels up to the dado, with stencil decoration above. Round-headed lancets with fine stained glass are present, along with simpler stained glass side windows. Three stout columns with stiff-leaf capitals support galleries on the north and east sides, which include a small altar. A low arcade can be found in the west aisle.
