Description
881, 883, 885, and 887 Govan Road in Glasgow is a four-storey and attic tenement building designed by Frank, Burnet and Boston in 1900, showcasing the Glasgow style. The structure is built from red ashlar and features a prominent corner bay.
The ground floor houses a public house and shop front, which have been altered. The elevation facing Govan Road includes a canted oriel window that extends through the first, second, and third floors, with a corbelled balcony above the third floor and a wide arched window in the dormer topped with a stone finial. The main first-floor windows have roll-moulded arrises, while the second and third-floor windows feature depressed ogee shapes with lipped lintels. A tall wallhead stack is accompanied by a segmental arched dormer that breaks the eaves.
To the left of the stack, there is a bipartite dormer with a pediment and carved tympana, which is corbelled out from the third floor. The corner bay, which is corbelled out from the first floor, has plain windows, a corbelled balcony at the fourth floor, and a hexagonal slated roof with an iron finial.
The elevation on Shaw Street is similar, featuring a south bay oriel window that rises through the first, second, and third floors, a simple balcony, and a small dormer. There are also two semi-curvilinear pedimented dormers adjacent to two wallhead stacks.
The roofs are slate, and although all windows have been replaced with modern pivot types, they are designed to be in keeping with the original glazing pattern.
