Description
The building is a social club located at 908 Govan Road in Glasgow, designed by C J McNair and Elder between 1937 and 1938. Originally a streamlined International Modern suburban super-cinema, it was converted into a bingo hall and cinema in 1974 and closed in 2006. The structure is prominently situated to take advantage of its corner location, featuring a façade made of coloured brick faience and glass that fronts a circular foyer with a void behind it. The wide curved corner entrance has five broad doors and decorative tile banding under a full-width cantilevered canopy. This entrance leads to five tall, back-lit Cristol glass-block windows, which are divided by sky-blue terracotta-tiled, reinforced concrete mullions (now covered with a banner as of 2008) and topped by another canopy. The auditorium is aligned east-west and is set back from the entrance façade.
The south elevation facing Govan Road is tiled below the canopy and constructed of brick above, featuring a large film hoarding panel and a vertical "Lyceum" sign that has been altered to read County Bingo. The long east elevation facing McKechnie Street is tiled with simple Art Deco doors at the ground floor and has a large hoarding panel on the blank brick wall above. A high concrete block, set back on the east side, contains four pilaster strips that house the projection room.
Inside, many original features remain, including light fittings, as observed in 2008. The glazed entrance doors lead into the circular foyer, which was partitioned in 1974 and has a geometric patterned terrazzo floor. Steps from the foyer lead to the large streamlined auditorium, which has been refitted for bingo. Ornate scrollwork decorates the grilles flanking the screen. The other half of the foyer features a circular frieze depicting Walt Disney characters, and the balcony retains its original seating with simple decoration. The projection room includes a projector base, a 1938 lighting board made by F H Pride, Illuminations and Electrical Engineers, with brass handles and dials built into the wall, as well as a Hewittic Rectifier in the Battery Room.
