Description

The New Globe Bingo and Social Club, formerly known as the Globe Cinema, was designed by Lennox & MacMath and opened in 1939 or 1940. This streamlined Art Deco building was converted into a bingo hall in 1964. It is prominently located on a gently sloping corner site and features a wide, two-storey, five-bay curved corner entrance with distinctive chevron-glazed lights, separated by fin pilasters. The street elevation is finished in painted stone, while the auditorium is cement-rendered. There is a base course and five picture windows on the first floor of the High Street elevation, which are linked by a cill course that steps down over two bays to the outer right.

The entrance has three pairs of two-leaf metal-framed glazed doors set within a recessed corner, topped by a curved cantilevered concrete canopy. Above this entrance, five tall windows with chevron glazing are divided by projecting fins that extend to the wallhead. The outer right side of the High Street elevation features an asymmetrical streamlined style retail shop front with a curved window.

Inside, the decorative scheme of the auditorium remains largely intact, showcasing classical-derived Art Deco detailing. The original cinema seating has been removed for the bingo hall conversion. The proscenium is segmental-arched with a roll-moulded cornice supported by triple colonettes and features a deep cavetto-moulded architrave, along with a curved balcony. The projection room is also largely intact. The first-floor corner section has decorative glazing, while the picture windows feature non-traditional glazing. The roof is made of corrugated asbestos.
