Description
The Pearce Institute, located at 840 Govan Road, Glasgow, was designed by Sir R Rowand Anderson in 1892 and constructed between 1902 and 1905. It is an early 17th-century Scots Renaissance style building constructed of ashlar.
The west elevation, which fronts MacLeod Hall, is notable for its six-bay tall facade featuring columns and a richly decorated pediment inscribed with the words "Quit ye like men." A modern door has been installed, in keeping with the original design. An octagonal stair tower projects, displaying bipartites and an ogee roof. Four tall transomed bipartites are set between buttresses, each featuring a rich pediment. The building is topped with a slate roof and a central, louvred timber belfry, sheltered under a lead cupola with a balustrade. Large, curvilinear gables extend to the north and south.
The south elevation, facing Govan Road, presents an advanced end to MacLeod Hall, fronted by a curvilinear gable with a fully rigged carvel finial and obelisks. The ground floor has three tripartite windows, each with "The Pearce Institute" inscribed within the tympana of segmental pediments. A large, mullioned and transomed pilastered window is complemented by a corbelled cill and an ornate strapwork pediment, flanked by two canopied niches.
The central, two-storey block incorporates a tea room and Lithgow Hall, featuring five ground-floor bipartites. A corbelled balcony, accessible through two small doors, extends over the ground floor. The first floor has four pedimented dormer heads, and a central wallhead stack with a segmental pedimented clock protruding on a consoled bracket. A ridge stack is also present. The main entrance is richly carved with obelisks, incorporated into an advanced, two-storey and attic gabled bay. A small ground-floor window is located below a first-floor ogee-capped oriel. Strapwork-headed windows are found on the first floor, and the crowstepped gable is topped with a stack.
The Pearce Street elevation displays a stepped two- and three-storey design. A large mullioned and transomed stair window stands prominently on this facade, alongside pedimented dormers and a crowstepped gable with a stack. A pend bay connects the northern crowstepped gable block with a ground-floor “cottage,” with Stephen and Fairfield Halls positioned above. The latter has a canted oriel with an ogee cap.
An ashlar north elevation faces a courtyard with walls of yellow brick.
The interior includes a simple entrance hall and a large main stair with a modern mural. Corridors are simply tiled and panelled. MacLeod Hall features a high, panelled dado and gilded armorial pediments over transverse-arched windows, topped by a barrel vault with a panelled ceiling. An organ serves as a central feature, showcasing fine wood and metalwork. Lithgow Hall, on the first floor facing Govan Road, incorporates a panelled dado, a fireplace inscribed "Welcome," and a pointed vaulted ceiling. Fairfield Hall, at the rear on Pearce Street, features a panelled dado and ceiling, a stone fireplace, and an oriel. Stephen Hall, positioned above Fairfield Hall, is identical, but with a mansard roof and an oculus. A gym is plain in design, with large windows to a yard. The restaurant has a panelled dado and simple fireplaces. The billiard room, lit from a high mansard roof, boasts a panelled dado and original Art Nouveau suspended light fittings. Numerous committee rooms and other spaces of social history interest are present, notably a Demonstration Room with a large fireplace and steep rows of school benches, originally used to teach female Govan residents cooking skills.
