Description
The Trustee Savings Bank, located at 705-707 Govan Road in Glasgow, was designed by Eric A Sutherland and built between 1906 and 1907. This four-storey building features a four by four bay design with identical facades facing both Govan Road and Broomloan Road, highlighted by a prominent corner bay. The ground floor is finished in polished granite and includes a corner entrance supported by Doric columns. A rusticated arcade features four arched windows on the east side and three arched windows along with a stair door on the north side.
The first floor is clad in channelled ashlar and showcases a projecting corner oriel, which is flanked by large sculptured panels displaying the Royal Coat of Arms. Giant paired Corinthian columns extend through the second and third floors, positioned between the corner oriel and the advanced end bays. These end bays feature balconies on the second floor and open segmental pediments on the third floor. Small windows between the columns are topped with cornices and open segmental pediments at the second floor architraves on the third floor. All window frames have been modernized. The building also includes an entablature and an unusual corner turret wash-house, with a flat roof that serves as a "back court." The interior has been modernized as well.
