Description

The Commercial Bank of Scotland, located at 5 Stewarton Street in Wishaw, was built in 1907 and features a 2-storey, 5-bay design in the Scottish Renaissance style. The building has an asymmetrical rectangular plan with a gabled roof and a turret on the right side. It is constructed from yellow ashlar sandstone, with tooled sandstone used for the sides and rear. The exterior includes a base course, a cavetto moulded cornice at the ground floor, a cill band at the first floor, and a projecting eaves course.

On the principal southwest elevation, the design is asymmetrical, featuring a decorative panel above a window to the right at ground level. There is a tripartite doorway on the outer left, with a timber door at the center flanked by windows and a decorative panel above that has a projecting pediment. The turret on the outer right has a roll-moulded corbel and a continuous stugged hoodmould that serves as the base course for the second stage. This turret is adorned with corbelled projecting pilasters that terminate in a corbelled cornice, topped with a conical roof and a decorative cast-iron finial.

The northeast rear elevation was not visible in 2000. The southeast and northwest side elevations are adjoining buildings. The ground floor features timber frame combination windows, while the first floor has timber frame sash and case windows, with the upper part consisting of six panes and the lower half a single pane. The roof is covered with grey slate, complemented by lead flashing, coped skews, and stacks.

The interior of the building is modern.
