Description
The Abbey National building at 62-64 High Street in Linlithgow is a three-storey Scottish Baronial tenement constructed in 1881. It features an asymmetrical design with a crow-stepped gable and a corbelled square turret that includes a dovecot on the right side. The ground floor houses a shop and a carriage pend. The exterior is made of snecked sandstone bull-faced rubble with ashlar dressings on the south elevation. There is a string course above the ground floor and a continuous cill course at the first and second floors, with the stops of both courses overlapping the downpipe.
On the south (entrance) elevation, the central entrance is flanked by the carriage pend to the left and a large display window. The first floor has a bipartite window to the left and a segmental-headed window to the right, both with hollow chamfered surrounds and a fluted mullion for the bipartite window. The second floor features two windows with moulded architraves. The gable apex is topped with a ball finial and a date stone reading '1881'. The corner tower includes an arrow-loop and a piended slate roof with flight holes, topped by a weathervane. There is a tall stack at the wallhead to the left.
The building has plate glass lower windows and two-pane upper sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate. It is flanked by lower buildings, and the side walls rise to a coped parapet. The original square rainwater goods are still in place.
