Description
6 Forrest Road in Edinburgh is a four-storey, four-bay Scots Baronial corner tenement block designed by John C Hay and dated 1872. The building features shops on the ground floor, a bowed window, and a finialled circular turret with fish-scale slating at the northwest corner, along with breaking eaves dormers.
The side elevation is irregular and gabled with three bays. It is constructed from squared and snecked rock-faced sandstone, accented with polished dressings. Notable architectural details include a moulded cill course at the first floor, a corbel table at the third floor, long and short quoins, and crowstepped gables. The windows are framed in tabbed, stop-chamfered surrounds. The original segmental-arched openings for the shop are located at the outer right, with a piended three-storey canted window above and brattishing on either side. The first floor features segmental-arched windows, while the second bay from the right has a dated shield plaque on the dormer gable.
To the left, there is a projecting two-bay section that includes a timber panelled door with a segmental-arched fanlight in a roll-moulded surround to the right, a small gabled canted window with a quatrefoil-pierced balconette above on the fourth floor, bipartite windows in the centre, and single windows to the left.
The building has a double pitch grey slate roof, with rebuilt corniced apex stacks featuring circular cans to the north, and a polygonal-ended corniced ridge stack also with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods complete the structure.
