Description
The District Registrar's Office, located at 24 Forrest Road in Edinburgh, is a four-storey, four-bay tenement block built in 1872 by John C Hay. This building showcases a Scots Baronial style, featuring crowstepped gables and shops on the ground floor. The outer bays have three-storey canted windows, while the outer right has a kneelered gable with a carved panel at the apex that breaks the eaves. The outer left displays piend-roofed canted windows.
Constructed from squared and snecked rock-faced sandstone with polished dressings (painted at the ground level), the building has a continuous moulded cornice and decorative brattishing above the shopfronts, which feature stop-chamfered, segmental-arched openings. A corbel table is present at the third floor, along with a moulded eaves course. The upper windows have stop-chamfered, tabbed surrounds, while the ground floor has segmental-arched openings.
The central entrance consists of a timber panelled door with a segmental-arched fanlight in a roll-moulded surround. Above this, there are single windows in two bays, with the fourth floor featuring windows topped with ball-finialled gables that break the eaves. The building is adorned with a 4-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows. The roof is a double pitch covered in grey slate, with crowstepped skews, corniced rendered stacks with circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
