Description
111, 113, and 115 Marchmont Road in Edinburgh is a four-storey, four-bay tenement building designed by John C Hay between 1880 and 1882. It is part of a terrace that reflects the Scottish 17th century architectural style. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural elements include a base course, a cornice above the ground floor, and a string course at the third floor. The doorways are surrounded by roll-moulded surrounds, with panelled doors and plate glass fanlights, and the reveals are chamfered.
The west (entrance) elevation has three doorways at the center, with single windows on either side. There are full-height canted windows at the outer left and right, which are corbelled to a square at the gablehead. The elevation features dividing cornices, with the outer left bay having a crowstepped design and Jacobean finials on the gable to the outer right. Masonic motifs are present in the paterae of the gableheads. The central bays have single windows, while the third-floor windows break the eaves, set within semi-circular pedimented dormerheads, flanking a central shouldered wallhead stack. A central framed and pedimented datestone is located above the first floor.
The building has plate glass sash and case windows and a grey slate roof, which includes a central stack with a bracketed cornice, corniced mutual stacks, moulded octagonal cans, and scrolled skewputts. The interiors were not seen in 1990. There is a low saddleback wall along the street.
