Description

31 Marchmont Crescent in Edinburgh is a four-storey, four-bay tenement built in the Scottish 17th century style by John C Hay between 1880 and 1881. It is part of a curved terrace and features squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. The building has a base course, a dividing band course above the ground floor, and a corbel table at the third floor that steps down to the second floor in the central bays. The reveals are chamfered.

On the entrance elevation, there is a central roll-moulded doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. A rectangular blank panel is set in the first floor above the doorway. There are single windows in the flanking bays, with those at the third floor breaking the eaves in pedimented and finialled dormerheads. The outer left bay features a full-height canted window that is corbelled to a square at the crowstepped gablehead, adorned with a floral patera inset. There is also a full-height canted window adjoining the building to the outer right, which has a pyramidal roof and a cast-iron finial. The windows are plate glass sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes a central T-section wallhead stack that is rendered, along with coped mutual stacks and moulded cans.

The street is bordered by a low saddleback wall. The interiors were not seen in 1991.
