Description
37 and 39 Marchmont Crescent in Edinburgh is a four-storey, four-bay tenement built in 1881 by J Jerden, designed in the Scottish 17th century style. The building is part of a curving terrace and is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. It features a base course, a dividing band course above the ground floor, a string course above the first floor, and a corbel table above the second floor. The windows have chamfered reveals, and there is a corbelled wallhead stack in the centre bay, which is rendered and coped above the eaves.
On the entrance elevation, there are two doorways and single windows at the ground level in the centre bays, with panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. Above, there are single windows, with those on the third floor breaking the eaves in pedimented and finialled gabled dormerheads. A square blank tablet is set below the chimney breast corbel. The outer left and right sides feature full-height canted windows, which are corbelled to a square at the crowstepped gableheads, and small blank heraldic panels are set in the gableheads, topped with stone finials. The building has four-pane sash and case windows, although there are replacement two-pane pivot windows at the ground level on the left. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are coped mutual stacks with moulded cans. A low saddleback wall borders the street. The interior was not seen in 1991.
