Description

33 Marchmont Crescent is a four-storey, four-bay tenement built in the Scottish 17th century style between 1880 and 1881 by Thomas P Marwick. It is part of a curving terrace and constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. The building features a base course, a dividing band course above the ground floor, a corbel table, and a string course above the second floor, along with chamfered reveals.

The entrance elevation has a central doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. There is a corbelled chimney breast with shell detail on the second floor. The flanking bays have single windows in gables, and a heraldic datestone reading "1881" is set in the gablehead. The outer left and right bays have full-height canted windows, which are corbelled to square at the crowstepped gableheads, adorned with stone finials shaped like a crescent and a thistle. There are also hoodmoulded blank tablets set in the gableheads. The windows are plate glass sash and case style.

The roof is covered with grey slate and features a corniced T-section gablehead stack, coped mutual stacks, moulded cans, scroll skewputts on the outer bays, gabletted skewputts on the central gable, and original rainwater hoppers. A low saddleback wall borders the street. The interiors were not seen in 1991.
