Description
44, 46, 48 Marchmont Crescent is a four-storey, four-bay tenement built in 1881 by R Roberts, designed in the Baronial style and forming part of a curved terrace. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. It features a base course, a dividing band above the ground floor, a string course above the first floor, a corbel table above the second floor, and chamfered reveals.
On the west entrance elevation, there are two doorways to the inner right, a doorway and a single window to the inner left, all with panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. The outer left and right bays have full-height canted windows that are corbelled to a square at the gablehead, with blank rectangular panels above. The gable on the outer left is crowstepped and topped with a stone finial. The inner right bay features bipartite windows at the first and second floors, with a single window above, while the remaining bay has single windows on the fourth floor that break the eaves in pedimented dormerheads. A central square blank tablet is located between the first and second floors, with a smaller tablet at the same level next to the canted window on the outer right.
The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a central shouldered and corniced wallhead stack, coped mutual stacks, moulded octagonal cans, and beak skewputts. The interiors were not seen in 1990. A low saddleback wall borders the street.
