Description

89, 91, 93 Marchmont Road is a four-storey, four-bay tenement building designed by R Roberts in 1882, reflecting the Scottish 17th century style. It is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. The building features a base course, a cornice above the ground floor, and a string course at the third floor, along with deep-set panelled doors, plate glass fanlights, and chamfered reveals.

The west (entrance) elevation includes relieving arches above a nook-shafted doorway and a single window in the inner left bay, with two round-arched doorways in the inner right bay. Full-height canted windows are present in the outer left and right bays, separated by dividing cornices. The outer left bay is corbelled to a square at the gablehead, which features a square floral patera inset. The ground floor has a central light that is pedimented, and there is a hexagonal pyramidal roof over the bay to the outer right. The central bays have bipartite windows, and the advanced third-floor windows break the eaves in crow-stepped dormerheads. A central framed and pedimented datestone inscribed "1884" is positioned above the first floor.

The building has plate glass sash and case windows, although uPVC replacements have been installed at the second floor of No 89. The roof is covered with grey slate, and features a central corniced T-section wallhead stack with shoulders linked to the dormerheads, along with corniced mutual stacks, moulded cans, and scrolled skewputts.

The interiors were not seen in 1990. A low saddleback wall borders the street.
